Explore the demographics and safety profiles of cities and districts across the Valencian Community, the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Azahar. This breakdown covers population size, age distribution, economic well-being, and local safety, including crime rates per 1,000 residents. All data is sourced directly from the National Statistics Institute (INE) and the Interior Ministry.

Zoom out with the wheel to see the whole region: hover over a town for its figures, click it to open it. The map shows the municipality’s administrative boundary. There’s nothing to select inside it: this city has no district breakdown. Use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

The map shows Bétera as a whole, outlined by the municipality’s administrative boundary. There’s no district breakdown for it: the city doesn’t have enough named areas with their own separate statistics. INE’s census tracts have no names, and “tract 1-004” means nothing to a buyer. So all the figures below are for the municipality as a whole, not its parts. For now, only these cities have named districts: Alicante (46), Calpe (5), Castellón (6), Dénia (6), El Campello (4), Finestrat (3), Jávea / Xàbia (6), l'Alfàs del Pi (3), La Nucía (4), La Vila Joiosa (5), Mutxamel (6), Torrevieja (5), Valencia (88).

Gini index
The Gini index shows how unequally residents’ income is spread: 0 means everyone earns the same, 100 means one person earns everything. The lower the number, the smaller the gap between rich and poor.

Safety

26crimes per 1,000 residents a year

Of these crimes, 95.3% are nonviolent: theft, burglary, vehicle theft and property damage. The remaining 4.7% involve violence or threats against a person: homicide, assault, sexual offenses and robbery.

Online fraud isn’t included in this figure: it’s recorded at the victim’s address rather than where the crime took place, so it says nothing about how safe the city is.

For comparison: Spain’s major cities
  • Oviedo 25.4
  • Bétera 26
  • Vigo 27
  • Málaga 51.7
  • Madrid 56.5
  • Valencia 62.8
  • Alicante 63.5
  • Barcelona 87.2
How to read this list

The list includes only cities with 200,000 or more residents; Bétera is smaller than all of them and is slotted in by its rate so the figure has a point of reference. That makes the comparison approximate: a big city has a different influx of visitors and has a different mix of crime. At 26, the rate is 54% lower than in Madrid (56.5) and 70.2% lower than in Barcelona (87.2). The Spanish average is 40.5, yet 17 of the 31 major cities are above it: the average also takes in thousands of smaller towns, where markedly less crime is recorded. Spain’s Interior Ministry itself (Balance de Criminalidad) puts the current national level at its lowest since records began. The cities in the list are Spanish municipalities with 200,000 or more residents.

Crimes against people and their homes

Two measures, each per 1,000 residents a year. Each bar’s scale runs up to three times the Spanish average.

Home burglaries 2.6275 a year
Spanish average 1.50
above average
Violent crime 1.2235 a year
Spanish average 2.40
below average

“About average” means within ±15% of the Spanish average. Spain has no official scale for this, so the threshold is our own, set wider than the rate’s year-to-year swings.

Home burglaries compared with Europe
  • Bétera 2.62
  • Italy 2.64
  • France 2.95
  • Sweden 3.20
  • Denmark 3.71

Home burglary is the only measure that can cautiously be compared with other countries, because the legal definitions of the offense are close. Eurostat puts Spain at 1.67, against 1.50 from the Interior Ministry, a gap of 11.3%, so the comparison is right in order of magnitude but not to one decimal place. Country figures come from Eurostat, crim_off_cat; Eurostat cautions that laws, recording practices and people’s willingness to report crime to the police vary from country to country. Violent crime can’t be compared this way: the definitions differ so much that the figures would be measuring different things.

Summer vs. winter, by quarter

Each bar is one quarter; the third (July–September) is highlighted. Summer (the third quarter) sees 3.1% less recorded crime than winter (the first quarter), averaged over 3 years for which both quarters are published.

Breakdown by type: 193 in total
  • Other conventional crime 115 59.6%
  • Theft without break-in or violence 38 19.7%
  • Burglary: homes, businesses and other premises 29 15%
  • Assault causing injury (serious and less serious), mass brawls 4 2.1%
  • Sexual offenses 3 1.6%
  • Robbery with violence or intimidation 2 1%

Each percentage is that type’s share of all conventional crime in the city (all crime except cybercrime). Only the six most common types are shown, so their shares add up to less than 100%: the rarer types make up the rest.

Apart from the one European comparison above, everything on this card can be compared only within Spain: crime-recording methods differ too much between countries, and both Eurostat and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) explicitly warn against direct cross-country comparisons.

The denominator is the city’s population in the Censo Anual (28,605); the Spanish average uses Spain’s population from the same survey (49,128,297). The calculation is ours: the Interior Ministry publishes raw counts by municipality, not rates per 1,000 residents.
